22 Week Pregnancy Update - Christmas!!

How far along? 22 weeks

Maternity clothes? No new maternity clothes but did get a new dress for Christmas Day! Still fit into a M in brand TFNC so that was nice

Stretch marks? Still nope, I do think I need to up the game on the body oil, body butter front though as I'm growing at a faster rate now

Sleep: Was a bit better until we got up North and I'm obviously sleeping in a different bed. Oh well I brought my pillows to try help haha

Best moment this week: Getting home for Christmas!!!

Worst Moment This Week: Driving the 10 hours up North from London to Aberdeen for Christmas, long!

Food cravings: Appletiser, yuuuum

Miss anything? Definitely prosecco now it's practically Christmas

Movement: Definitely more active now. One night I held my hand on my bump and could feel what almost felt like baby's heartbeat beating away but I'm pretty sure that's not possible! Every time the husband goes to feel the kicking baby stops though, typical!

Anything making you queasy or sick: Not so much this week, getting up later and being off work is really helping

Gender: Still not sure

Labour signs: N/A

Symptoms: Just general aches and pains of getting bigger

Belly button in or out? In but a lot flatter so must have been pushed up a little. Will have to take the piercing out and put the retainer thing very soon as it's hurting more now. I just forgot to take it with me, oops

Happy or moody most of the time? Very happy, surrounded by family

Looking forward to: The whole of this week at home

Bump:

Popped out a lot now!

21 Week Pregnancy Midwife Appointment

I had a midwife appointment booked at my GP just a few days after my consultant appointment which I thought might be a bit of a waste of time but it was nice to see her and they obviously have to keep up with you as well.

She did the usual blood pressure, pee checking and looked over the consultant notes and asked if there was anything I wanted to discuss with her. She then checked the baby's heartbeat and discussed antenatal classes with me and we were on our way. Short and sweet!

I do like how they book your next appointment there and then with them rather than you having to call up and make an appt like you usually do on the NHS.

Much easier!

20 Week Anomaly Pregnancy Scan

We had our 20 week anomaly scan on the 6th of December and in the run up to it I was so excited and eager to see baby Knott again. The closer we got to the actual date of the scan though, the more apprehensive I became.

I think it's because it's the scan where they check all the different parts of baby and make sure everything looks normal and is functioning correctly.

Rather than focusing on the good parts of having the scan i.e. seeing baby Knott on the screen again, maybe finding out if it's a boy or girl etc, my brain just honed in on all the things that could go wrong - typical pessimist!

The scan lasted about 40 mins and we didn't get to go in till about 20 mins after our appointment time by which point I was bursting to pee after the 2 litres of water they tell you to drink!

The sonographer was great and really chatty. Talked us through everything she was looking at, zooming in on different parts of baby, explaining what things were and what she was checking. The only part she went quiet at was when she was checking the heart but she'd warned us she'd be quiet for a few mins so we were prepared.

They take all sorts of measurements (measure legs, arms, head etc) and check all the vital organs and spine. She even managed to zoom in on baby's face which was amazing, although a bit spooky!

We were hoping to find out what we are having but unfortunately towards the end of the scan she spent ages looking at my placenta and eventually had to do an internal scan to check it as she suspected it was low lying. She did the internal scan and it confirmed it was low lying and touching my cervix. It meant that she forgot to go back and check the sex of the baby so couldn't really tell us for sure what we're having! But we weren't too bothered because as long as baby was looking healthy that's all that obviously mattered to us.

I have to have another scan to check at 36 weeks whether the placenta has moved up and we're planning on a private 4d scan anyway so hopefully we'll find out then!

I'll do a seperate lost on low lying placentas/placenta praveria once I've done some research.

20 Week Consultant Appointment

I got referred to a consultant in my first booking appointment due to past and current health issues that came up at my booking appointment back in September. December seemed like such a long way off then but now here it is!

Basically:
- I suffer from migraines currently which they needed to monitor with coming off medication etc
- I had an eating disorder (mainly anorexia) through my mid-late teenage years and into my early twenties. I'm lucky to be able to say that part of my life doesn't affect me anymore and I received the treatment I needed at the time. I know a lot of people can't say that and still suffer in silence so I urge anyone, especially if pregnant, to get the help they deserve. It's nothing to be ashamed if and it can change your life I promise! I don't usually talk a lot about that time in my life because I feel that chapter is closed but I'm debating doing a separate post just in case it might help even just one person
- I've had recurring kidney infections which they seem to be quite interested in when you're pregnant, not sure why!

Unfortunately, after barely waiting anytime for appointments before, I had to wait ages for this one. The husband came with me so at least there was someone to chat to! It was so busy. First I waited about 40 mins past my appt time to go through to the usual antenatal room where they do your blood pressure and check your pee. Then we had to wait another 45 mins to see the consultant. Luckily she was great and super efficient...

Angelsounds Fetal Heartbeat Monitor Review

I'm a bit of a worrier and at the beginning of my pregnancy I heard about handheld Doppler devices you could buy to have a listen to the baby's heartbeat at home.

We saw one in Mothercare but it was recommended from 28 weeks onwards and we needed one that would obviously work a lot earlier as I was only about 12 weeks at the time.

We came across the Angelsounds fetal heart monitor on eBay for £19.99 and thought we'd investigate it a bit further. I sometimes get a bit wary of things on eBay haha. We read a few good reviews on it and thought we may aswell give it a go.

It arrived really quickly and to be honest I wasn't expecting much at around 12 weeks but within about 5 mins of moving it around we found the heartbeat!

It came through really clear and was such a special thing to hear so early on.

The device also came with a cable that you can record the heartbeat onto your computer with. We haven't got round to that yet.

Now that I'm a bit further on, we can hear baby kicking around in there and moving about.

We try not to do it too often but it's really reassuring to know we can listen whenever we want!

Best moment this week: Hearing baby's heartbeat on the loud Doppler thing midwives use at our appt rather than just on our little handheld thing

Worst Moment This Week: Nothing in particular. Struggling with things to wear at the moment now the bump has appeared!

Food cravings: Still tangerines, vinegar and mini cheddars

Miss anything? Not really this week

Movement: Still just pulling and cramping feelings

Anything making you queasy or sick: Still nauseous in the mornings! People's perfumes!

Gender: Don't know :)

Labour signs: N/A

Symptoms: Still nauseous, crampy feelings, bad hip/groin pain

16 Week Midwife Appointment

Thought I'd write a quick post on the 16 week appointment because I wasn't sure what to expect. No one tells you what's going to happen at each appointment!

All the appointments I've had so far have been at the hospital but the 16 week one was with a midwife at my local GPs.

I'd had a quick google to see if I could find out about other peoples experiences but there seemed to be a variance on what happens depending on where you live.

The appointment lasted about 20 mins. The midwife was really nice and said she'd be the one we saw at the GPs for the duration of my pregnancy.

She checked my urine, did my blood pressure, gave us a DVD on breast feeding and talked about that for a while, talked about antenatal classes and when to sign up for them and then listened to the baby's heartbeat and timed that.

It was lovely to hear the heartbeat out loud as we'd just heard it on our hand held Doppler thingy with headphones. She said it sounded strong and the speed was good.

Some people think that appointments like this are a bit of a waste of time but I felt it was nice to be checked up on!

Bras!

One of the first things I noticed, even before I knew for sure I was pregnant, was that your boobs go through a lot of pain and massive changes even at the very beginning of pregnancy.

I was told you're supposed to stop wearing underwire bras pretty much as soon as you know you're pregnant. I think it's because it can damage the breast tissue as it grows as the wire can be quite restictive.

This is all fine and well but unfortunately all the pretty, cute and glamorous bras you see in shops are all underwired!!

I went to M&S to get fitted properly at about 10 weeks because I was already in a lot of pain by then...

Maternity clothes? Still just maternity jeans and leggings. And bought some new bras (will do a separate post on these at some point as I had such an issue finding any nice ones!)

Stretch marks? Nope...want to keep it that way!

Sleep: A bit better, have figured out a way to sleep with pillows which seems to help the hip and groin pain

Best moment this week: Boobs have stopped hurting, woop!

Food cravings: Mini cheddars, tangerines and vinegar still

Miss anything? Eggs Benedict and prosecco

Movement: Not really, just stretching and cramps feelings

Anything making you queasy or sick: Morning times

Gender: Don't know!

Labour signs: N/A

Symptoms: Still nauseous in mornings, bad hip/groin pain

Belly button in or out? In

Happy or moody most of the time? Happy

Looking forward to: Not feeling sick, hopefully!

My 1st/beginning of 2nd Trimester Essentials

1. Bread - I always need to carry a piece of bread in a plastic sandwich bag when I'm commuting to try and stop the nausea becoming too over powering!

2. Orange juice - was never that fussed before I got pregnant but all of a sudden I'm loving a bit of orange juice

3. Vitamins - I know I probably don't get all I need from the food I eat so I try to take preggo vitamins on top. I used to take loads of colic acid etc when trying to conceive so it's not a big deal to carry on remembering to take them!

4. Travel sickness bands - turned to these in desperation and didn't expect them to do anything but they do take the edge off a little...

Nuchal Screening Scan

Our appointment for our nuchal screening scan was on the 11th of October. We were really excited about being able to see the baby again and to be able to start telling everyone the good news!

The scan went fine. They measured the fluid at the back of baby's head, took blood from me and sent both the measurement and the blood off to a lab in Birmingham to calculate the risk of Down's syndrome.

The blood test went really badly this time. They only needed to take 1 vial of blood but for some reason it just wouldn't come out! I ended up with a bruise for weeks that spread all round my arm - a great look! (Photo doesn't do it justice at all!!)

We got to see the baby's heartbeat and it moving around. The sonographer kept saying how active he or she was being. Every time she tried to take a picture for us baby kept jumping away! I kept laughing which didn't help matters haha...

12 Weeks pregnant!!

I've seen these kind of updates on other blogs and thought it might be fun to try it out as well. Seems like an easy way of keeping track of things!...

How far along? 12 weeks

Maternity clothes?  My Zara jeans seemed to be the first things to stop fitting. The hair bobble round the button didn't last very long! So I've gotten a pair of Topshop Leigh maternity jeans, which are ok but a bit too soft for my liking, they seem to stretch out very fast. I've also gotten a couple pairs of maternity leggings which can be worn with long tops for work

Stretch marks? None. Started on the Mama Mio tummy rub already! I'm determined to try and not get any!

Sleep: Bit mixed. Having big trouble with pain in my hips which gets worse at night and often wakes me up :(

Best moment this week: Seeing our baby again at the 12 week scan (separate post to follow!)

Worst Moment This Week: Still being sick and very very nauseous in the morning!

Food cravings: Tangerines, mini cheddars and vinegar...not altogether...yet!!

Miss anything? Not at the moment, other than not feeling sick!

Movement: None yet

Anything making you queasy or sick: Nothing in particular sets it off. Worse in the morning though

Gender: Don't know!

Labour signs: N/A

Symptoms: Very tired, nauseous, being sick, hip pain, very sore boobs!

Belly button in or out? In and still have belly button piercing in

Happy or moody most of the time? Happy!

Looking forward to: Feeling the baby move and telling everyone we're pregnant!

Booking Appointment

We got a letter through from our hospital to go along to our booking appointment pretty soon after I'd been to the GP to let them know I was pregnant, it was quite a surprise because I'd read on forums about people having to wait ages!

We were a bit nervous about going along to this hospital because it had bad reviews but I think it had been done up in the past few years so seemed alright! All the midwifes we dealt with were fab and really friendly.

It was a long appointment where they went through my medical history in detail and took a lot of blood! Looked like about 4 vials. I'm alright with needles and blood but there's something about veins that makes me feel blehhh!

They also weighed me, took my blood pressure and made me blow I to something that looked like a breathalyser but turned out to be a carbon monoxide reader so they can monitor women who smoke I think. Neither I or the husband smoke thank goodness so we're all good on that front!...

Dating Scan

Due to my cycles being all over the place and a bit unpredictable, we decided to go for a private scan on Harley Street before our booking appointment at the hospital.

The clinic was lovely and I managed to just pop off from work on my lunch break to meet the husband and head over as my office is a 10 min walk from Harley Street. Very handy!

Seeing the teeny tiny little human being that was our baby on the screen was an unbelievable feeling!! The heart beat was flickering away and the sonographer confirmed we were at 9 weeks which was 2 weeks behind what the NHS would have had us down as, based on my LMP.

Mr K got emotional as soon as the image came up on the screen. I think it's going to be a theme throughout this pregnancy - sympathy emotions!

It really helped put my mind at ease and made everything feel very real :)

Hello Spain!

Baby's first holiday happened quicker than we thought it might with us booked to go on holiday with my family when I was 8 weeks pregnant!

I had a bit of cramping and a touch of bleeding beforehand so was a bit nervous about flying etc but everything had been booked for a while and it didn't feel severe enough to warrant too much worry. The doctor reassured me it could just be implantation bleeding so that helped too.

It was lovely to have a week to chill and have a bit more time to ourselves to get used to the idea of the pregnancy. I also wanted to tell my parents in person (they live in Scotland and we live in London) so it gave us the perfect opportunity to do so.

Unfortunately the nausea kicked in just before we left for the airport but all the relaxing, eating and mocktails helped slightly!

Baby's First Festival

After finding out we were pregnant the weekend before, we realised we were going to SW4 in Clapham London on the August Bank Holiday weekend!!

We were going to a pre-party so I had to pretend I was drinking with everyone because we didn't want to start telling most people until we'd had the first scan! By the time we got to Clapham Common everyone else was quite merry so I got away with sticking to water.

That was, until an eagle eye best friend noticed the photo above and asked me straight away if 'we had anything to tell her'!

I think the not drinking is always going to be a bit of a give away if you're usually quite an active social butterfly.

It was such a good day/night and was funny to think that it was Baby K's first ever gig :)

The 2 Pink Lines!

Finding out I was pregnant was one of the most special (albeit slightly scary!) moments in my life. We had been trying for a while since we got married last year and things were taking longer than expected. We were actually about to give up for a while so I guess it's true what they say when you relax and let things just be, that's when it's likely to happen!

My cycles had been extremely irregular since I came off the pill and I was never sure when I was ovulating or when, if we had conceived, we should test. Over half a year of disappointment that comes with negative tests I left it really late to test in August. My cycle was at around 50 days when I finally decided to test!!

I decided that instead of building up the husband's hopes by telling him I was planning on testing, I'd just test first thing in the morning and see for myself first. The only problem was I woke up at 5am needing the toilet so had to test then. When it came back positive I just went back to bed and cuddled up to the husband with the biggest smile on my face and lay there for 3 hours thinking till we both got up.

I then made breakfast and wrapped the test up in tissue paper before handing it to him saying I'd gotten him a present. His reaction was the best thing ever. He looked really confused for a second then jumped up, had a little cry (which is hilarious considering he's in the forces and rather built with all the time he spends in the gym!) and gave me the biggest hug ever.

Was such a special moment.

Hope yours was too!

Friday, 23 August 2013

Hello!

It's taken me a while to get round to actually doing this but here I go!

I've always wanted to start up a blog but have always struggled to find the time or the right subject to keep me motivated. Now that I'm pregnant, it seems like the perfect opportunity to channel all the worries, questions, memories, exciting things that happen to every woman when she's pregnant, into one outlet where I can share things with others in the same boat.

I hope you enjoy following our progress and let me know if you're expecting too!
