Travelling With a Baby - Flying

I thought this might be an apt post to do seen as I am up visiting family in Scotland at the moment and Isla has now been on 3 Easyjet flights in her 19 weeks in this world. I am due to fly back with her by myself (for the first time) next Wednesday so wanted to share some tips that I'll hopefully keep in my mind on the way back!

Top tips for flying with a baby:

1. Be prepared - it's like preparing for a whole day out really. You need to make sure you have enough formula (if bottle feeding), nappies, wipes etc to cover you for the whole journey. Ensure you have a spare baby outfit in case of milk or poo explosions. I'd also take 2 muslins in case of any accidents, muslins have saved the day in a whole manner of situations in our household before! Nappy bags or sealable plastic bags are also a must to lock away any unpleasant smells from nappy changes etc. After all everyone is stuck in the same area for the duration of the flight and definitely don't want to smell baby poo the whole way!...

Topic Thursday: Taking care of yourself as a new mum

Once you've gone through pregnancy and had your baby it's easy to get sucked into the all consuming, albeit lovely, world of being a mummy. Being a mum is a 24/7 job with no holiday days to take. You become the entourage to your beautiful little newborn from the minute they are born.It can be easy to lose sight of the little things that you used to enjoy and that made you feel like 'you'.

Here are a few (very simple!) tips on how to jump out of the mum-rut!

Even if it's just for a trim, having your hair seen to can make you feel like a whole new person. It can be hard to get to the salon but if you can take baba along or get the partner to watch them in the evening for an hour, go for it! There's also plenty of fab mobile hairdressers out there that will come to you and are often cheaper than the salons...

What I Wore Wednesday: Mummy OOTD #6

Leopard Top, H&M
Cardi, Primark
Jeans, Zara
Shoes, New Look

Struggling to figure out what to wear up here in Scotland. The weather changes 3 times a day!! It is quite mild today though and we're heading on a road trip out to where we used to live so hoping this keeps me warm enough. I'm still loving leopard prints (but not the tacky kind!) and have seen a jumper and scarf from H&M that have my name all over them - Friday payday purchase perhaps :)

Push Presents

I often get funny looks from people when I mention the topic of push presents. I believe it has originated in America but like all good things from the good old US (hello Starbucks, McDonalds, numerous TV programmes etc) it is slowly finding it's way over here.

A push present is basically a gift your partner buys you for carrying and giving birth to your child. It's a thank you for all the hardship you've had to deal with in the process.

I know some people find push presents tacky but I'm all up for being thanked. I mean, my goodness, if there's anything I've done in life that I deserve to be thanked for it is definitely childbirth!!!

There is also the argument of 'well your baby should be enough of a gift in itself'. I am in no way arguing that the gift of a child isn't the greatest gift you can ever receive but it most certainly did not come wrapped up in nice paper with a lovely bow attached! Your baby took 9 months to create and a whole lot of hard work to bring into the world. The way I see push presents is just a little token from your partner to acknowledge how hard you worked to bring your beautiful baby into the world.

We have also embraced the American tradition of baby showers so why not embrace this one too...

2nd Wedding Anniversary

2 years ago on the 11th August 2012 we got married!

Originally we were planning to go away child free for a European city break for our anniversary but timing wise with Isla's christening, and the fact that my darling husband forgot to renew his passport in time, those plans got shot to pieces!...

Isla was baptised today! This was her beautiful cake made by a friend who also made my wedding cake :)

Topic Thursday: Hair loss post pregnancy

Well well well, I was wondering when another delightful post pregnancy body change would join the party and it appears hair loss is the next guest to arrive!

How cruel. It's not as if I have enough hair to lose anyway, I'm practically bald! I've always had very fine, straight blonde hair and have envied anyone with thicker hair than me i.e. everyone! I am all over hair extensions (when I can be bothered these days - think I've only worn them once since Isla was born!) and any product that gives me a glimmer of hope of achieving the bouncy volume rocked by the likes of Blake Lively...

What I Wore Wednesday: Mummy OOTD #5

Draped top, Selected Femme
Jeans, American Eagle
Studded shoes, Topshop
Necklace, Accessorize
Watch, Michael Kors

Loving the fact I can wear these jeans again! I got them out in Dubai and they are the best fit ever. Wish we had American Eagle here. It's so hard to find a good fit of jeans and now I finally have I have to blaady get them from the US or abroad #typical!

The weather has gotten a tad chillier after months of sun so it was a bit odd pulling on a pair of jeans. Even put a pair of socks on the other day - gasp! Hope this isn't the end of summer...

Tested Tuesday: Munchkin Grippy Dots

I've been meaning to get a bath mat (how exciting!) for a while now so that Isla's bath support from Mothercare doesn't slide about now she's packing on the pounds and is a bit of a wriggly fish!

My problem is I'm really fussy with anything that's to do with home decoration and the thought of a gross cream or clear bath mat that will go all mouldy within no time at all put me off buying one for ages.

Then these little beauties caught my eye in Asda last week. They're fun, they're colourful and they're something a bit different...

Mummy Monday: 4 Month Postpartum Update

(Please excuse the fact that my stomach is a completely different colour from the rest of me - guess which part doesn't get a look in when the sun comes out, in public?!)

I think this has been my favourite month so far. Isla and I are becoming a proper little team and she amazes me, cracks me up and fills me with silly love I've not felt before all within the space of 5 minutes!

I feel like I'm getting back to myself a little bit more each day and going to gym is actually playing a big part. It gives me a bit of time to myself whilst Rob has Isla and it's helping to begin to increase my confidence in my body again. I like pushing myself and seeing results and although it never happens as fast as you want it to, it's getting there slowly but surely. I do reckon if I stopped drinking wine and eating cheese I'd look like Miranda Kerr in no time - JOKES!...

4 Months (16 Weeks) Old - Baby Update

This month has brought about so many changes in Isla. She is really growing up and mastering all sorts of new things every few days - I can barely keep up!...

Style Saturday: Mummy OOTD #4

Seen as I didn't do a mummy OOTD on Wednesday I thought I'd do one from Friday when Isla and I went to meet the lovely Jess and Jasper from Lilypod and Sweetpea. We love our little meet ups and Jess always looks so fab so have to make an effort haha :)

Jeans, Zara (pre pregnancy)
Flip Flops, Primark

Here are the 2 mischief makers pretending they're on a log flume...

Style Saturday: Isla's Outfit's #2

Still quite hot so our short sleeved bodysuits are still getting a lot of use.

Money Tips: Saving For A Baby

After the initial excitement of getting pregnant and knowing there's a baby on the way, it's only natural that us parents to be start to think about our finances.

Any addition to the family is going to increase your outgoings and it's important to make sure everything is in order before your little one arrives.

I've put together a few helpful tips for helping with the different aspects of money matters when it comes to being a parent...

Top tips for improving your own financial situation:

- Take a good look at all our your outgoings and separate them into necessities, affordable things you like to have and luxuries. Weigh up the luxuries and get rid of anything you can't afford. Examples of this include take aways/nights out, TV services such as Sky and Virgin
- Set up a budget spreadsheet. I love the templates on Money Saving Expert
- Make sure you aren't wasting money on your bank accounts. There are often hidden fees. Don't be scared to switch to an account with better benefits for you
- Try and haggle down your phone, Sky etc bills. It's amazing what companies can do for you if you threaten to leave!
- Plan your meals for the week. This will cut down your spending in supermarkets and avoid food wastage
- Same goes for online shopping. It should hopefully cut down your spending because you can't be tempted by those random items in store
- If you smoke, quit!! It's amazing what you can save due to the price of cigarettes these days
- Sell anything you don't need anymore. Who knows what treasures you have in your attic, shed, under your bed!
- Sign up for all the loyalty cards you can. Tesco Clubcard, Boots Advantage Points, Superdrug's Beauty Points, Nectar Card to name a few.

Top tips for saving:

- Clear any debt before attempting to save. There's no point trying to save when you are paying interest on an overdraft or credit card - it's wasted money
- Shop around and find a savings account with a great interest rate that matches your needs. The Money Saving Expert site is what I used to find mine
- Set up a direct debit into your saving account so you aren't tempted to not pay into it one month!
- Put any loose change you have in a jar and take it to on of those coin machines at supermarkets that count it all up and give you vouchers towards your shopping or cashback. We regularly get a good £18-£20 out of our jar

Top tips for buying for your new arrival:

- Before you buy anything, check that it isn't cheaper elsewhere. The shopbot site is a useful tool
- Have a google and see if there are any voucher codes available for the site you are using. 9 times out of 10 there will be
- Look out for sale events online. They tend to be more regular than in store
- Sign up for the loyalty cards where you can gain points and get invited to sale previews etc
- Check out your local NCT Nearly New sales. I've been to a couple of these, they are great!
- eBay!! If you're happy to buy second hand, you're bound to find what you're looking for on eBay
- Gumtree. Like eBay without the bidding process. You usually collect goods in person as well so you can have a chance to haggle!

Tested Tuesday: Sophie the Giraffe Review

I saw a lot of Sophie's kicking about at baby groups and at first I wasn't very sure what they were! A quick google later and I had my answer. Sophie is a very clever little giraffe teething toy!

She's no ordinary giraffe, she's a French giraffe no less! Created in 1961 on St Sophie's day by a chap called Monsieur Rampeau. He was an expert in transforming sap using rotational moulding of rubber to make toys. Year and after year Sophie's fame grew and she's now a worldwide hit. In France, 9 out of 10 newborns have a Sophie the giraffe which is incredible!...

Mummy Monday: Missing my Bump!

I keep seeing pregnant women everywhere at the moment and it's made me realise how much I miss having a bump!

5 reasons I miss my bump...

Style Saturday: Mummy OOTD #3

Still pretty warm down here so another summery outfit. I love a stripe but sometimes they can make you look a little bit...well...wide! These stripes are a lovely size and do no such thing (I hope!). The rope straps and drawstring adds a nice detail shape to the dress too - makes it a bit more exciting.

Dress, H&M (from last year)
Sandals, a shop in Ibiza (last year)
Watch (Michael Kors)

Foodie Friday: Favourite Meal of the Week #4

Quorn Tacos

I LOVE Mexican food and you can't beat a good taco! I have to admit I cheated and used an Old El Paso spice mix pack.

1. Add about 300g of Quorn mince and 100ml of water and bring to boil. The mince will be ready to use now
2. I add mushrooms because I love them! Cook for 5-10 mins
3. Add in the spice mix and 100ml of water
4. Bring to boil and then simmer for 10-15 mins
5. Prepare your toppings! We have a salad with peppers and plum tomatoes
6. Grate cheese (or just buy it grated like we have #mummytimesaver haha)
7. Heat up tacos in oven at 180 degrees for about 2-3 mins
8. Load up and enjoy

Be warned, they are very messy!

Topic Thursday: Public Transport with a Baby

Public transport and babies. Not what you would imagine to be a good combination!

This is specifically related to trains and the tube in London (I didn't have to get on any buses thank goodness!).

I decided I wanted to take Isla in to see people in my old office in Central London. Usually I would drive up and I have taken Isla in the car up to London many times with no problems at all. The only thing with getting to my office is that it's right in the centre of London and not ideal for traffic/parking etc. So I decided to take a train and the tube to get there.

Here's our adventure...

What I Wore Wednesday: Mummy OOTD #2

An incredibly boring OOTD this Wednesday!! We're off to the beach but the weather is rather cloudy so thought I'd dress for comfort today. Nothing to do with the fact I'm in pain from the gym yesterday haha.

T-shirt, Topshop
Long vest, H&M
Cut off leggings, H&M
Flip flops, Accessorize
Watch, Olivia Burton

May have to update this on a day where I wear a more exciting outfit and pretend it was Wednesday!

Tested Tuesday: Dr Brown's Bottles Review

We were originally using Tommee Tippee bottles but Isla developed colicky symptoms and wasn't bring up her wind very well. I had read about the Dr Brown's bottles on other blogs and had noticed a few mums using them at baby groups. I asked them their opinions on them and each person I came across said they loved them and sang their praises!

I bought one bottle from Kiddicare just to test whether Isla would take it or not. A friend had said her boy wouldn't take it after the Tommee Tippee bottles because of the difference in teats. She took them fine so I went ahead and ordered another 4 from Amazon as they were the cheapest at the time (£19.99).

Mummy Monday: Me Time with a Baby

Before I had a baby I don't think I fully appreciated what it felt like to be needed at any point within a 24 hour period! I woke up when I needed to, got ready and then got on with whatever I needed to with my day. Whether it was work, plans with friends or errands, it was under my time control and if there was spare time at any point of the day, it would be dedicated to me time.

Me time for me used to usually mean things like going to the gym, catching up on recorded TV programmes, sitting on the laptop (which the husband would say is what I do the most), pampering or skyping far away family or friends.

Now me time has taken on a new definition. It's any time I manage to snatch back within a day to just sit and catch up with everything I haven't managed to during the day. It usually means sitting on the laptop figuring out things for the blog, organising what we're meant to be doing within a given month (if we're going away etc), googling and booking classes for Isla, sorting my husbands life out etc etc. The list goes on and on and never seems to end!! I struggle to get everything I want to done within the tiny bit of time I have - Isla is still going down around 10pm which doesn't leave much of an evening left. I am also trying my best to fit in 3 gym sessions a week which is an effort!...
